summer school 2012

why attend?

I have fallen in love with Cambridge. Corpus Christi is the best venue for a summer school, at least from my past experiences. It is very beautiful and there is an incentive to work harder when you are living and studying on campus.  The one to one sessions and mock interviews allowed me to converse openly with my counsellor about my university applications. They also boosted my level of confidence as did the public speaking and presentations. I would surely recommend anyone to do this programme and thank for making my stay delightful’.

If you want to be a serious applicant to one of the U.K’s leading universities, you need to prepare.

The application process at world class universities varies considerably. At some U.K. universities entrance exams are required as well as an outstanding school record. Oxford and Cambridge interview prospective students and some universities set entrance exams in certain subjects. Prospective medical school students are also interviewed and most have to take an entrance exam such as the UKCAT or BMAT.

We want our students to be fully prepared for the highly competitive application process by the time they have completed the WUP course, whether that means writing outstanding essays, personal statements, performing at their best in entrance exams or at interview. Our students learn about the big picture as well as the fine print of the application process for their chosen subject and universities.

As well as ensuring that the application meets all the formal requirements, the course is designed to sharpen minds and stimulate academic interests. This is important because highly competitive universities such as Oxford and Cambridge interview prospective students. The purpose of the interview is to find out not just what the students know but how he or she thinks. Oxbridge colleges also want to assess how much extra reading or related work students have done beyond the school curriculum. They want to know how curious the student is and how much effort has gone into developing intellectual interests. For this reason the Critical Thinking and General Studies seminars of the WUP course are designed to boost each student’s intellectual confidence as well as stimulating them with new ideas so that they will be able to perform with confidence at interview.

Students who attend the WUP Course will be taught by graduates and post graduates from the world’s leading universities. All our teachers are highly experienced at helping students gain admission to the U.K.’s top universities. Each student is allocated a Director of Studies who will personally oversee the application process. Students have several one to one sessions with their Directors of Studies. Being taught in one of Cambridge’s oldest colleges is a rare privilege. It is an inspiring experience in itself. Just like Cambridge students, WUP students are taught in college in small groups and they get a considerable amount of individual attention from their tutors. Students will be expected to think, question, and be fully engaged in their learning. They will be given written assignments to do outside class time and sit tests designed to improve their exam performance. But we aim not only to introduce our students to new ideas and to stimulate them intellectually, perhaps more importantly we teach them how to set themselves the highest standards in their academic work. Over the course the students’ intellectual confidence and maturity will grow considerably. Above all, by experiencing outstanding teaching in a world class university, WUP students will return to their schools with the determination to succeed in the fiercely competitive challenge of securing a place at one of the U.K.’s leading universities.
